Sinai, Red Sea
The Red Sea is
considered by divers as the
greatest diving destination in the world
together with the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. It is geographically situated
in the Middle East and is bordered by Egypt, Israel, Sudan,
Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. Land based places in those countries are usually
in the desert and the contrast between the landscape and the underwater scenery is the most amazing in the
world. Clear water, unbelievable marine life
and beautiful desert landscapes are the trademark of a destination like
Sharm El Sheikh, situated on the southernmost tip of the Sinai
Peninsula, a
desert which reached mystic dimensions with Moses opening the Red Sea for the
fleeing Jews in the biblical scriptures. Although scuba diving is the major
activity in the area, desert safari's and sight seeing are interesting for divers
and their families. Sharm el Sheikh is the best resort place in Egypt with
western standards of hotels and accommodation and the best dive sites around.
The
currency in Egypt is the Egyptian Pound and is worth 1 US dollar = 3.4 EL
